Everyone is replaceable
Everyone is replaceable. This statement, in its literal definition, basically goes against my favourite book, Linchpin “not easily dispensable”, but I’ve realised the reasons I like it are not really about being indispensable. It’s about bringing value to everything you do.
Yes everyone is replaceable. However, the value you bring to anything you do should be extremely difficult to replace. It should be one of those situations where we don’t quite know what that code does, but if you take it out, the whole thing falls apart. That’s the type of value you should bring and the type of impact you should bring in everything you do. Put your heart and mind into it. Bring the highest quality of work you can so what when you are done it is not easy to remove or write off.
So everyone is replaceable, but the imprint you leave and the changes you bring shouldn’t be easy to replace. That’s the key thing about being a linchpin: it’s not that you’re irreplaceable; it’s that the value you bring that is hard to change.
